in what format to keep docs

is it necessary to keep hard copy of tax invoice of both sell and purchase tax invoices...?
since I am getting purchase tax invoices in my mail and based on this I create sell tax invoice in hard format.....officials are asking to have print out of all purchase bill.....hard format is not enough and will be penalized for not keeping this....plz suggest and rules provided by govt in what format can we keep these
