Characteristics of a True Social Worker/Reformer

  1. Concept of NGO based on dedicated missionary spirit/voluntary service to the suffering humanity, destitute, disabled in an organized manner emerged in Europe, USA etc. to supplement & complement efforts of the Govt.   In India this movement was started with this notion but too our ill luck, despite tremendous useful contribution made by some NGOs of course Microscopic in number; overwhelming majority of NGOs in India earned bad name due to dubious role of minting money and suffering from several deficiencies, infirmities plaguing the Govt. departments like lack of work culture, honesty, dedication, commitment, initiative, elements of sacrifice in terms of time, money & energy.  A social reformer in contrast to social worker/social activist, social servant is expected to go on reforming himself by shedding his deficiencies and simultaneously reforming others in the larger interest of humanity so that morality/spirituality prevails upon one & all in the world.
  2. Greed is not only in terms of money/wealth/status etc. but also for hunger for greater number of appreciation certificates, to become President, Patron/Advisor of more and more Organizations, lust to preside over more and more functions/to be Chief Guest and so forth.  This is like a charming and cute girl who embraces any one who is millioner blows whistle to her, goes after rich person who offers Toffees, gifts to her, handsome influence person who blinks at her etc. (i.e a well established Organization).  However she is not attracted towards a handsome, wise but a poor gentleman (a newly formed Organization with less resource).  Such social workers, social activist/leader is akin to one who enjoys four to five wives at a time but none cared and looked after properly.  She is like a housewife who is busy in attending kitties, cinema and other social functions but for children deprived of love and care. They relish “Bani Banai Khichri”.  Such over ambitious social activists are like one who has bundle of invitation cards and goes on attending one marriage after the other and asking with folded hands to the heads of the family for any service with reply thanks.  This is sheerly lip sympathy and nothing but a showoff.  They serve none and please none for want of sincerity.  Such social leaders feel inflated with personal publicity, proximity with high ups i.e. Ministers, Commissioners, big wigs and do not justify/prove real assets to the organization headed by them due to divided loyalty as also requirement of a true “Karmyogi” as defined in Gita. A Husband who is tempted to ladies other then his wife or a wife who is attracted by persons other then her husband do not respect in the family/society.
  3. Some social workers say that they have not confidence for a particular matter, so hesitate to shoulder their responsibility.  They must aspire, inspire and then perspire if they have real inkling for serving the society, instead remaining self centered person. Five persons belonging to most wretched communities became five Piyaras/heroes/warriors of Guru Govind Singh ji.Churchle/Subash ignited and infused life into virtually dead.  Great is not only one who inspires others but also one who is willing to be inspired.  Why to feel inferior? One has only to enter into a stream and to feel depth/warmth/coldness of the water instead

of feeling scared of entering into the water and not to gain confidence and experience. How one without initiative/spirit of adventure/risks can thinks of attaining mastery in any field. Some social workers feel that there are many ways and means for Social service, why to remain clinging to a particular organization. But if one really feels concerned about serving the society seriously, he can not resist jumping into the arena and stop treating social service as a Hobby/pass time or to kill the time or to work as per his wishes, whims and fancy. At this juncture, the society is on ventilator/oxygen. This warrants well organized community movement with multiple approach. We can receive blessings of God only if we worship as per his requirement/liking and not as per our liking/Convenience for instance-God will never be pleased if we go on reading scriptttures preaching others but without bothering to remove our own deficiencies . Social reformers are required to give constant hammering to the workers for timely and proper execution of works. There is no Panacea. We have to resort to different therapies to address the malady. But if the social leader only hankers after his personal name and fame in the media high rungs of the society,  at the cost of name and fame legitimately due to the organization, then he can not be a true social worker/reformer.  They are more concerned with personal “Wah..wahi”.  Self interest must be sacrificed at altar of much superior interest of the mother organization.

  1. Social worker is expected to render services as a disciplined worker with full whole heartily and not luke warmly with time bond result oriented time & motion, cost benefit ratio concept. Probably Manu Bhai Shah a very wealthy and highly educated from England went to Gandhi and asked for assignment of duty as a social worker.  He was expecting an honorable big job like administrator or the like but amazingly Gandhi asked him to do the work of scavenger in a colony of down trodden which he accepted very gladly and humbly. To a social worker, working with no zest and fervor or half heartily or as a favour to the President/Organization etc. Swami Vivekanand has to say “They alone live who live for others, the rest are more dead than alive”.  A social worker must score more than 80% marks in the score card for social worker based on different virtues for perfect social worker/ human being but most of the social worker take the path of the least resistance, adopt shortcuts and opt for “Meetha-Meetha Harap --- Karva—Karva thu—Thu”. A good social worker says “I must not fail, in my duty/responsibility. Leader of the organization is the engine.  He has to carry the bogies along with.  He has to be role model to inspire others by investing basic elements of sacrifice in terms of time, money and energy for the organization so that others emulate his untiring devotion to the organization.  He has to carry out the works of other team workers who shirk responsibility but must never allow work to suffer at any cost.  Equally important component, i shall like to add to the Karmyog.  Philosophy enunciated by Lord Krishana (selfless, egoless, desire less, service) is to perform the duty with utmost sincerity , honesty, dedication meticulously in a well planned, organized, flawless way qualitatively as well as quantitatively- then leave upto Almighty for result of the action.

  1. To devote time money and energy for the social organization, one has to strike a balance between his personal health, domestic affairs, livelihood etc. but as a good human being must spare maximum possible time, money, energy for society in order to contrast from a beast.  Indeed there is no limit all is relative but every body/noble soul has inexhaustible energy/capacity/potential which is solely determined by the degree of will power one possesses and with the grace of God with passage of time one goes on developing missionary spirit and enjoying the social service, ultimately leading to the climax and he helplessly becomes Meera like devotee “Pagal, Januni” (Passion) one track single minded like Arjun targeting for the eye of the sparrow.  At this stage social work becomes the way of life for him as the top most priority. They do not mind facing music of criticism at home, relatives, friends and the society.  Such social worker can be ascribed as ideal Social Reformer/Saint provided he is totally devoid of ego anger, self aggradication , short temperness etc. which shall also be vanish in due course of time with the grace of God if he vigorously meditates and continues social service in a desired way.
  2. An other breed of the social workers comprises of those who can not afford to be morally sound enough to call spade for spade. They indulge in too much sycophancy that they can not displease the authority who matter as if they belong to treasury benches. They can not play the role of opposition to denounce/condemn the wrongs of the superior.  This attitude is appreciable if purely based on wholesome spiritualism with no ulterior motive and personal benefits or for the organization, name and fame/gains otherwise he is nothing but a Raj Bhatt. No sinner person is expected to speak or write about a corrupt person how so ever big he may be that he is an honest person. He is not expected to speak/write about a corrupt person that he is a honest person, if one has no moral guts to say him as the corrupt person.
  3. A 5th class student must aspire and strive for moving forward even up to PhD like wise a new  social worker must go on craving  to improve and imbibe the culture of social service to reaching its zenith .
