08 June 2011An employee staying in a rented house in Chennai has been transfered to another city where the company provides him guest houe at concessional rate. In such case whether he can claim HRA exemption in respect of rent payable in Chennai in which his family resides.

According to section 10 (13A)
House rent allowance received by the employee in respect of the period during which rental accommodation is occupied by the employee during the previous year.
Here the employee stays in a Guest house and the house in chennai is occupied by the employee's family.
