I'm curious because there's lesser syllabus than in group 1 (prima facie) yet the pass rate is persistently lower.

Its because of two theory based Papers- Audit and ITSM.
ICAI's requirement is increasing in these two papers and their thrust in on quality answers.Understand conepts and write answers as per pattern required by ICAI.

CA IPCC consists of 2 groups and one can clear the exams either both group together at a time or only one group at a time. As per the new updated syllabus, group1 contains of 4 subjects in which 2 are practical subjects (cost and management accounting + accounting) and 2 are theory subjects (corporate and other laws + taxation laws) where as group 2 also contains 4 subjects in which 2 are practical subjects (financial management + advance accounting) and 2 are theory subjects (EIS-SM + audit and assurance). As per my opinion, it totally depends on the preparation of an individual and the toughness of the question paper asked in exams.
If preparation not done correctly, one can conclude any of the group as tough or both the group as tough so my simple suggestion here will be to honestly prepare you subject and don’t leave anything unprepared. Do frequent revisions of the concepts and do solve MTP, RTP and PM. They help to hone your presentation skills. I would strongly recommend Prepca mock test series because of their quick evaluation and quality of their questions. Some questions are directly picked into ICAI exams. Their ADAR report helps to identify strengths and weakness so that you can work on your weak areas and fetch more marks.
Sometimes it can possible that a student had honestly done his preparation but the questions asked in the exams are tough. My simple suggestion for this situation will be to do your revision properly and join test series to understand the quality of question which could be asked in exams. You can also do self assessment by solving test papers at your home within 3 hour.
Some of my friends claimed that group 1 is tougher than group 2 as the syllabus is very vast in group 1 compared to group 2 whereas some of my friends claimed that group 2 is tougher than group 1 as theory part is more in group 2. So rather than asking other person about which group is tough in IPCC, study hard and do frequent revision and find yourself that none of the group is hard.
Hope this help!
