In my opinion, proper understanding of existing indirect tax laws are highly important to understand GST. Starting practice should not be aimed at getting clients. It should be focused on getting in-depth knowledge, providing better services and doing justice to the job undertaken.
Reading draft law/rules, comparison with existing laws, attending seminars conducted by eminent speakers, reading and writing articles could be the starters. It should be long term oriented.

Try to understand the various challenges which are going to be faced by various sectors for the implementation of GST. One of the areas could be filing of multiple returns and obtaining registration in various states for the inter state sales.
Another challenge which could be faced by small enterprises would be that everything is going to be online and they may need expert guidance.
So, understand the challenges and your capability of providing guidance to them and then start building network in that particular area.

In today's word, building a professional brand is a must. Apart from gaining through knowledge of the subject matter (i.e. GST in your case)
People should know that you possess knowledge of GST, only then they will approach you with their question for your consulting. Hence I suggest you register on GST India Forum (gstindia.net) and start posting some good articles, questions, answers.
