We have paid 38,979/- to a GTA Provider. In that 979 is service tax amount.
We have taken 979 as input credit and adjusted but not paid any service tax

YES you have to pay service tax because reversal of entry under GTA input can not be adjust against service tax liability

As you said you paid 38979.00(gross amount) including st and st 979.00

That means GTA Service is partially taxable.......
But you are necessary to pay that liability before taking credit

if service tax is charged by transporter, then u don't have to pay again, you are eligible to take credit of same provided that GTA bill is paid.
