Recently CBIC has issued a recommendatory notes on invoice number format.
is it compulsory to follow that or can we use our own invoice number format?

You can use Yourself. But, Invoice number will be different in any of the Previous/Future Years
You can use your own format..but ensure it is different for every year...
it has to be as per Rule46 read with Sector-31 of CGST act 2017
