what he found :When light traverses a transparent material some of the deflected light changes in wavelength.
This phenomenon is called Raman scattering effect! 

 

Interesting bit of info.:
after completing his master's degree in Physics in Presidency college in 1907 he became an accountant in finance dept of Indian Govt.
