Both are good . It depends on your way of studying .Shekars book is in question answer format with past RTP's and Exams covered and Manoharans book is easy to read and understand like reading a story (What I felt). For me I have cleared both PE-II and Final second group when I shifted from Shekar to Manoharan. But I know a lot of people endorsing Shekars book also.
For me I felt the presentation in Manoharans book more comfortable and also the concise presentation for revision at the end was very helpful for me to revise almost the whole book very easily and quickly ( The same thing is there in Shekars book also , but in different format ) .

Friends,
In my opinion Sekhar Sir's Book has some basic mistakes. It is not at the CA Final Level. For example some basic mistakes under Section 28, 44AD etc. Manoharan Sir's book has no mistakes but it not covered entire syllabus and has lack of concept clarity. The best book that will lead to success both in exam and practice is - Dr.Vinod . K. Singhania & Kapil Singhania - Direct Tax Law & Practice-
Just test, you will like the subject.

In my view T.N.Manoharan book is the best book. I prepared tax for both PEII & CA-Final without any coaching classes by simply adopting this book. I cleared my tax subjects with more marks which helped in the aggregate scoring. The concepts with simple examples. it is easily understandable. At the end of each chapter, a question that has asked in the previous exams with answers was attached. After studying the concepts and principles thoroughly, we can try to solve the problem asked in the prevous exams which is attached. This helps to know about the pulse of the question setter. it is even best for self study without coaching.
