First anniversary of 26/11 Mumbai terror strike being observed today 

Today is the first anniversary of 26/11 Mumbai terror strike, on this occasion  prayers and candle-light vigil are being held in Mumbai and various other parts of the country to pay homage to the victims of the terror attacks.

 

A series of programmes are being organised across India on the occasion. A memorial for 18 security personnel, including NSG commander Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, martyred during the 26/11 terrorist attack at Girgaum Chowpati in South Mumbai is to be unveiled by Union Home Minister P.Chidambaram on Thursday.

 

Also a 'Suraksha March' of police and various security agencies is being organized from Gateway of India to Girgaum Chowpatty.

 

The police force would also showcase its newly-acquired modern weaponry to instill faith in the citizens that the country's security forces are ready to face a 26/11-like crisis in a better way.

 

Congress President Sonia Gandhi has said the country has learnt many hard lessons from Mumbai terror strikes and emerged stronger.

 

In a statement on the eve of the first anniversary of the 26/11 terror attack, she said it was "an assault on the very idea of India".
