IT CAN BE INSERTED IN XL BY DATA VALIDATION OPTION….
Once you decide what validation you want to use on a worksheet, you can set up the validation by doing the following:
Select one or more cells to validate.
On the Data tab, in the Data Tools group, click Data Validation.
1. The Data Validation dialog box is displayed.
2. Click the Settings tab.
3. To specify the type of validation that you want, do one of the following:
|
|||||||||||||
1. In the Allow box, select List.
2. Click the Source box and then type the list values separated by the Microsoft Windows list separator character (commas by default).
For example: | |||||||||||||
To limit entry to a question, such as "Do you have children?", to two choices, type Yes, No.
To limit a vendor's quality reputation to three ratings, type Low, Average, High.
Note The widtth of the drop-down list is determined by the widtth of the cell that has the data validation. You may need to adjust the widtth of that cell to prevent truncating the widtth of valid entries that are wider than the widtth of the drop-down list.
Make sure that the In-cell dropdown check box is selected.

The symbol you have figured out will be of several things: -
1. As said by Mr. Sourav. and
2. When you will filter the data you will get the same symbol.
Further if you have any specific requirement to know then kindly elaborate.
