Entry Tax paid on the Goods can be set off from the VAT payable .

It is tax on entry of goods into aa area, imposed by states not imposing or those who have abolished Octori. The entry is distributed to the Muncipalities to spend on disposal of goods entering an area and to clean up the mess by the entry of goods.
Octroi is collected by the respective municipality for said purpose only.

Can a registered dealer take a set off for Entry tax paid ,on purchase of goods(from Outside Orissa) for resale against VAT collected in the state of Orissa. (As per FY 09-10 rules).

Entry Tax in Orissa (due date for filing Entry Tax Return is 21st of every following month). Entry tax is to be remitted to the sales Tax authorities every month even though we claim refund of entry tax from the department.
Entry tax is to be paid on CST Purchases made from Outside State to Orissa state and the Sales tax office of Orissa will give a material list covered under entry tax and rates of entry tax on such materials are prescribed by them. Only for those items only, which should not be ineligible as per VAT Act (Should not be in negative list items of purchases as per VAT schedules) on that we can claim VAT entry tax refund claim.

Entry Tax is the tax which is Charged on Specified goods for entry in local area. it is charged by state government. Rate of Entry tax is Diffrent in each State.
In Bihar Entry tax is Payble on Iron and Steel, Electrical Items, Coal, HSD, Pipe, Marble, Wine etc at Specified rate. each state has Diffrent Schedule Goods to Charge Entry Tax.
You can Take Input tax Credit Only on Construction Material or Material Which is purchase to re-sale. But Cant Claim Input credit of Consumable purchase from Other state.
