Always devote some part of your exam writing time for thinking. A student usually scrambles to start writing and goes on writing for the full 3 hours of the paper.
For every question, sub question etc, give a couple of minutes to prior thinking about what exactly is required by the question. Once the question sinks in, your thoughts will organise the reply, in your mind.
Only when you are clear beforehand about what to write, will you be able to write with speed. That way, you will write the complete answer as you know and recall, and you will have a few precious minutes out of the 3 hours left.
See to it that you allot some minutes to read your entire answer paper before you hand it over al the end of the 3 hours.
No paper will appear "lenghty" if you frame your answer in yr mind before you start writing it.
Good luck !
