Please tell me whether it is compulsory for individuals (whose books of accounts are being audited) to file their income tax return electronically. Or can they submit them to the IT Office?

Hi,
electronic filing of ITR is compulsory for companies and tax auditable firms. Since individual is not covered hence the ITR of individual can be filed with the IT office.

Hi,
as per section 139, online filing is compulsory for tax auditable firms and companies and as per section 2(31) individual and firm both are seprate assesee hence in the lines of section 139, individual should not be covered under compulsion of electronic filling.

Hi,
i fully agree with Jimmy that it is better to file individual return electronically. but a practical dificulty is that either you should have digital signature for filing the return or the acknowledgment duly signed by the individual will have to be sent to Banglore by ordinary post only. Only after receiving of acknowledgment by banglore office, return will be deemed to be filed for which assesee will not have any documentary proof that the acknowledgment has been received by banglore office.
