Cs prof old syllabus - mistake in q paper

Dear members,

Is there any formal channel through which I could bring a mistake in the question paper to the attention of ICSI?

I had appeared in old syllabus of Professional programme old syllabus in June 2015. In paper 3 - FTFM, i attempted a question 5 (c) in which correlation coefficient was given as 0.7%. This was interpreted by me as 0.007 as i did not want to contradict the facts of the question. Obviously the number should have been 0.7 for the numbers to make sense. I specifically mentioned that 0.7% is given as the data in the question and, i left a note that using 0.007 this is the answer, and if 0.7 was used this would have been the value of beta.

Till now, i seem ok. But it was a heavy weightage question, and was followed by subquestions which required the use of the beta derived.

Now, correlation coefficient is never written as a percentage. So i have reason to believe that there was a printing mistake in the question paper, which has resulted in 2 possible answers, and i am a little worried that I might lose marks for no mistake of mine.

How could i bring the printing mistake to the notice of ICSI?

I am attaching a copy of the paper, which i am only able to produce from the internet. Please turn to page 4, question 5(c) if you would like to see the mistake for yourself. Please dont be distracted by comments of the childishly exhuberant coaching institute, which may have just as well written "read 10 years GLA of ICSI" on the front page.

Your guidance is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

g.k.

I fully understand your concern. Professional exam papers do contain errors and unfortunately no corrections are announced during the exam. I often tell my students that you have to be smart and recognize the evident mistake and take approriate action. You did the right thing by writing the note. However, you should have written just one note that you are taking the correlation coeff. as 0.7 and gone on to solve the question. If you have given two answers then you will get marks for the solution and there is no need to worry.

no dear friend. Its 0.7% and you should not interpret as 0.007.

you have to take 0.7 only even if they say it is a percentage.

corrleation is a effect of two variables on each other. it can be stated in percentage terms, one security affects the other in 0.7% thats the correct interpretation.

conclusion: Your interpretation is wrong.

A correlation coefficeient is a ratio and never a percentage. On the other hand, coefficient of determination can be expressed as a percentage.

karan... its not proper to express correlation as %. in any book of ca or cs or statistics i havent seen correlation as a 0.7% but always as 0.70... your interpretation of 0.7% is possibly the icsi intention. your answer would be right but for the wrong reasons. suppose it was given as say, -0.7% would u have ignored the negative sign under the assumption that beta should "usually" be positive? even the interpretation that one variable affects another is incorrect. correlation is no indicator of cause or effect, but it is a standardised measure of co-movements... anyway what is the use of knowing about correlation coefficient. it should be a test of applying the correlation coefficient. and in such cases there should not be any doubt because of printing mistake... its unfair when a candidate can score full on marks if such errors are not there.

Yes i understood your point of view my dear friend,

But whatever it may be, we are not expected to solve the question based on signs. we are expected to solve as per the methods given in the study material. Even if the percentage (%) is mentioned we should interpret in line with what is given in our study material. It may be the mistake of person who has drafted the question paper. In hurry he has put percentage mark in front of the value. In ca final exam november 2007 MAFA paper such mistakes were seen.

so, we are not expected to calculate it by thinking out of box.

this is my personal point of view. It may not be correct as per your view. but generally institute do not do such things in exam. its a mistake. we should ignore it. and take the value as 0.7 only.

regards,

karan joshi.

I'll accept what you said. 0.007 is unusual. But as a candidate, i wanted to respect what is given in the question paper and move on. But in the process I've overthought. It's all water under the bridge at this point. Thanks for your comments.
