Don't be under any misconception that if you migrate to IPCC your articleship will get reduced from 3.5 years to 3 years. Your articleship period will remain the same and if you migrate to IPCC then your first attempt according to that will be Nov. '09 instead of the current May '09.
I have confirmed this from the institute helpdesk by personally visiting ICAI's Vishwas Nagar office and then enquired it myself and got to know the answer, as once I was also thinking about migrating to IPCC to reduce my articleship period by 6 months.

If a PCC student migrates to IPCC, then putting a break to articles is totally his choice, it is nothing conpulsory. And yes the period already served under articles will be taken into account the next time you register for articleship after passing IPCC.

if you search in google with "pcc to ipcc" you will find an official link from icai's website which will explain the whole stuff.
My situation is similar to yours and i too thought that my articleship will be reduce by 6mths....but it isn't going to be the case.
This scheme is useless for us and suits only the new guys...
