Coffee Exports Up By 29% to 1,68,094 Tonnes in Apr-Aug 2011

NEW DELHI: Buoyed by robust global demand, India's coffee exports rose by 29 per cent to 1,68,094 tonnes in the April-August period of the current fiscal.

The country had shipped 1,30,048 tonnes of the brew in the same period of the previous fiscal.

The realisation of coffee price in the first five months of 2011-12 fiscal rose by 37 per cent to Rs 1,35,737 per tonne compared to unit value of Rs 99,271 per tonne in the same period last fiscal, according to the Coffee Board data.

In value terms, shipments of the brew increased by 77 per cent to Rs 2,281.66 crore during April-August of the 2011-12 fiscal as against Rs 1,291.01 crore in the year-ago period.

In the first eight months of the current calender year, coffee exports rose by 34 per cent to 2,68,169 tonnes compared to 2,00,517 tonnes in the same period of the previous year.

In the October-August period of the coffee year 2010-11, shipments rose by 36 per cent to 3,34,031 tonnes, against 2,45,061 tonnes in the year-ago period.

Coffee year runs from October to September. India largely exports coffee to Italy, Germany, Russia, Belgium and Spain.
