The results of Qualifying Exams for Chartered Accountants released this week revealed an improvement in the number of black candidates for 2008.

Tsakani Matshazi, President of the Association for the Advancement of Black Accountants of Southern Africa (ABASA) said her organisation was pleased that there was an increase in the number of black candidates who sat for the exams last year as this indicated good progress in increasing the pool of prospective black Chartered Accountants, but however noted the decline in the pass rate percentage of black candidates relative to 2007.

“As an organisation whose key objective includes increasing the number of black Chartered Accountants in South Africa, we are pleased at the achievements of our people this year. This serves as great encouragement to all black learners and students that it is indeed possible to achieve, irrespective of the injustices of the past”, Matshazi said.

A total of 142 black candidates wrote the Financial Management exam, while 998 black candidates sat for the Public Practice exam.

Of the total black candidates who sat for the Financial Management exam 73% passed, while those who sat for the Public Practice exam achieved a 52% pass rate.
