Actually you can do much more than that too...

birds need you... so do dogs cows...

if you live in a tenament... you can also put a bucket of water in front of your house so that the passing cows dogs can quench their thirst....

but there is also one problem while putting water for birds...

DON'T put water for birds at a lower level... coz while the birds are drinking water it might happen that a cat might catch it...

same is the thing for cats... the dogs might catch those...

 so always keep a difference in the level... birds... may be in terrace...

cats - some high wall 

and you can put water for dogs, cows at lower level...!!!

but yes please do it...
