To get a fair idea about how well different security products perform one can see the results of various tests performed by these organizations:

1.  AV-Comparatives:  https://av-comparatives.org/

2.  AV-Test:  https://www.av-test.org/en/home/

3.  Virus Bulletin:  https://www.virusbtn.com/index

These days all antivirus software have information about viruses stored locally in the users' systems and also a internet based cloud database having upto date information about latest viruses. Even behaviour of a file is analyzed and compared with the information in the cloud. So when the internet is on, the protection offered by security solutions will be higher. Norton and trend micro rely more on this cloud database. If continuous internet connection is not possible Kaspersky and bitdefender are better options but they may slowdown some systems. Bitdefender has large daily updates that can be an issue to someone whose internet pack is limited. In that case avast and eset are better options.

Bitdefender has recently released a free antivirus solution. It is a cloud av and hence continuous internet access is required. More info:  https://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/free.html

Hello Members,

Antivirus software products block malware from entering your computer system. When security software is unsuccessful at preventing attacks, it is then supposed to detect and remove the malware that gets through the defenses. The best way to verify vendor claims about performance is to learn how products perform in tests at independent labs. One of the best antivirus researchers is AV-Test, with laboratories in Germany. AV-Test has a lot of credibility within the industry. AV-Test's labs have two dozen servers connected to 280 workstations, where its technicians simulate test environments and perform analysis. They have more than 50 million pieces of malicious test data. Each day, the collection grows by 55,000 new items of malware. The AV-Test suite of tests measures security software's protection, repair and usability components. AV-Test results are the objective criteria we consider when we rank the best antivirus software.

Best Regards.
