The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) joined hands to begin a new era in professional education and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 23rd April, 2008 at New Delhi in presence of Shri Prem Chand Gupta, Hon’ble Union Minister for Corporate Affairs. Prof. V N Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor, IGNOU, Shri Keyoor Bakshi, President, ICSI, Dr. Parvin Cinclair, Pro. Vice-chancellor, IGNOU, Shri Datla Hanumantha Raju, Vice President, The ICSI, Shri N K Jain, Secretary & CEO, The ICSI, Dr. S P Narang, Former Secretary, The ICSI and Shri Philip Baldwin, CEO, Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Secretaries also graced the occasion.

 

Under this MOU, from July, 2008 the IGNOU will offer the students and members of the ICSI a specialized B.Com Course with major in Corporate Affairs and Administration and specialized M.Com Course in Business Policy and Corporate Governance. The programmes have been designed with an objective to develop skills and competencies of the students in the field of Corporate Affairs and Administration and Business Policy and Corporate Governance respectively.

 

Shri Prem Chand Gupta, Hon’ble Minister for Corporate Affairs addressing the gathering said that learning is a continuous process and acknowledged the significant contribution made towards distance education by these two Institutions of national repute. The minister was hopeful that MOU would also be a value creator for corporate India, which is fast emerging on International business horizon.                                                   

 

Shri Keyoor Bakshi, President, The ICSI, addressing the ceremony expressed that the coming together of the two marks a noble beginning of collaboration between pure academics and applied academics.

 

Shri Datla Hanumantha Raju, Vice President , The ICSI expressed that this MOU shall make university education very affordable for the students and enable them to pursue graduation and post graduation courses along with their vocational or other activities through distance education mode.

 

V N Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor, IGNOU announced that admission into these specialized B.Com. and M.Com. courses start w.e.f. July, 2008.  While touching upon the corporatization of university education, he expressed that this tie up would result in better harnessing of the resources in professional education available with IGNOU.

 

The meeting was also graced by Shri N K Jain, Secretary & CEO, The ICSI. Who expressed that mutual strengthening by educational streams in academic and professional fields is a historic necessity and members/students of the ICSI would be immensely benefitted through this academic partnership.
