Accounting treatment for provision for gratuity

i have a query ,

  Provisions for gratuity have'n been provided for the previous years.can it be provided in the current year , if so , can i adjust the previous years liabilities against the reserves. and the current year through profit and loss account

As per as AS-5 u can dr the prior period items to the current yr bt it wont be allowed while compution the income tax.
