94 cases of fake chartered accountants reported

New Delhi, July 30 (PTI) As many as 94 cases of unqualified persons pretending as chartered accountants using fake registration numbers have come to the notice of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Parliament was informed today.



Of the 94 cases, including issue of false certificates, registration number and address, 15 are under investigation with the police and 75 are under examination with the institute, Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid told the Lok Sabha.



He said the punishment for such offences is a fine up to Rs 1 lakh. In the event of second conviction, the fine may go up to Rs 2 lakh with imprisonment up to one year.



In reply to an another query, Khurshid said the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) does not have any role in prosecuting chartered accountants involved in Satyam-like scams in the country.
