Receipt Number: Receipt number to be quoted in Form 16/16A will be generated by TIN. Receipt number will be of 8 alphabets and will be applicable only for statements pertaining to FY 2010-11 and onwards. When you submit the TDS return, look for the receipt number on the top right hand side of the acknowledgement receipt and quote that 8 alphabets in the TDS certificate.
.
For Example, Receipt Number: ABCDEFGH
.
Basically its the Tax-deduction Account Number (TAN) of the deductor, Permanent Account Number (PAN) of the deductee, and Provisional Receipt number of TDS return (Mentioned in the acknowledgement as Token No.) filed by the deductor will form the unique identification for allowing tax credit claimed by the taxpayer in his income-tax return.

The six alphabet number of TDS certificate is automatically generated by the system when downloading the TDS certificate from the tin-nsdl site.

@ Mr Deepak Gupta
Your answer is wrong. Perhaps you could not pick up the question correctly. Whatsoever you have informed is correct but have not relevant to question. You have mentioned eight digit number as Receipt Number which we get on e-filling Qtrly TDS Return.
@ Mr Manal Kumar
Your answer is wrong as you also failed to understand the question exactly. However, you are right that this No. is displayed at right top.
@ Mr Ram Kumar Goel
You are correct.
@ Mr Vijay Kumar.
Already said Mr Ram Kumar Goel has answered correctly. Whenever we request for, quarter wise, Form 16A (mandatory for Companies and Banks but others can also request. Form 16 is also on request but not mandatory) from NSDL site by logging into our account then system generates Form 16A and emailed at given email address. And Form 16A thus received carries its Number at right top. To open and print Form 16 requires some skills.

TDS certificate no. is a unique 6 charcter number; whereas TDS receipt number is a unique 8 character number. During the e-filing process of ITR, in the section on TDS against 16A, the software expects you to feed unique 8 character TDS Certificate number. [which obviously is wrong]. My question is "which TDS number[6 character certificate no. or 8 character receipt no. ] should be mentioned in TDS details other than salary [Form 16A], while e-filing ITR

you will get certificate number when you request for form 16A from tin.nsdl
for particuler quater .......unzip it with tan registration number
and convert txt into pdf by using software or nsdl pdf convertor utility
By using software saral tds you have to request for form 16a it will automatically download the tds certificate from nsdl site without putting any detail at Nsdl site

Thanks Ranjeet; but my query was beyond your explanations. After the TDS certificate is downloaded from NSDL site, it carries a six character certificate number on the top right . In the details section, some where in the body of the certifcate, it mentions the 8 character receipt number. MY query was and still is that which of these two numbers is to be used while e-filing the income tax return. The IT return software expects you to feed a 8 character number, which in the software is inadvertently mentioned as TDS certificate no.

The basic problem is that there is some error in the ITR forms. They are asking for Unique TDS Certificate No. issued by TIN which is of 6 characters but the ITR forms insists that this no. should be exactly 8 characters long. Hope the IT department rectifies the error at the earliest so that the return filing can commence with this information which however is not mandatory for this assessment year.

CERTIFICATE NO - SIX CHARACTERS & RECEIPT NO- EIGHT CHARACTERS ARE DIFFERENT IN FORM 16A. FOR E FILING OF I TAX RETURN THEY ARE ASKING TO ENTER 8 CHARACTER CERTIFICATE NO BUT WE HAVE ONLY SIX CHARACTERS. I PHONE TO I TAX DEPARTMENT THEY ARE ALSO NOT SURE OF THE NO OF CHARACTERS , THEY TOLD TO CONTACT THE DEDUCTOR. ANY ONE HAS MENTIONED TO WRITE 00 BEFORE SIX CHARACTERS OF CERTIFICATE NO BUT NOT SURE.
LAST YEAR I HAD GIVEN TOTAL TDS DEDUCTED IN 1 ROW BUT AY 2012-13 WE HAVE TO GIVE 4 QTRS TDS DEDUCTED IN 4 ROWS.

Quoting of TDS Certificate number in the return forms is not mandatory but optional. I think we should not mention the same as long as the matter is clarified by the department.

Mr Amit Ghosh has mentioned about entering TDS deducted in 4 rows i.e separately for each quarter for AY 2012-13; instead of mentioning in one row for the entire year. Mr Ghosh, could you please give reference to the order/instructions/guidelines issued by competent authority in this respect.
I think, as long as deductor is same and TDS section is same, we can make one entry for the entire year in one row.
