there are several incidents when central govt employees have offered to surrender their salary in parts for good of national interest, viz help for kargil, help for gujrat earthquake. in such conditions as such amount is transferred to relief fund, such amount goes direct excluded from the salary calculation ( they offer 1/2 days salary in general)

I wanted to mention one example for surrender of salary. Our former Prime Minister  Rajiv Gandhi invited Mr.Sam Pitroda from Unites States to India for developing our communication network of India and assigned the position of Chairman of Telecom Commission. He was ready to take the position without salary and our Prime Minister accepted it.  But since our prevailing rule/law doesnot permit the same he was bound to take one rupee per month as salary and remaining amount he surrendered  to central govt and the salary so surrendered would be excluded while computing his taxable income
