It's great that you have heard it and that too from the "Nightingale of India" !
Basically, Adi Shankaracharya, the proponent of Advait philosophy (Vedantism) wrote this poem for his Vedanti followers to teach them that just possessing dry knowledge of "Aham Brahmasmi" from the Upanishads and scripttttural learning will not help them attain ultimate salvation. After all, it is only the holy name of Govind (Lord Krishna) and his loving devotional service that will help them attain ultimate salvation.
