One social group, termed as deviants, would answer to this question - " How are you?", like this - " Would you do something for me if I'm in trouble? If not, what's the point in saying, how I am?".
This was some decades back, and in general, the question has become a part of our habit. The writer is right, both the question and the answer should be honest ones.
