A conversation with
Nitish Jain
1stRank Holder, PCC Exam May 2012

First of all many congratulations to you from CAclubindia.com.

Thank you

So, how you are feeling right now and what was the first thing that you did after seeing your scores?

Sir, Sir, I am feeling very high. It seems as if my all dreams have come true. When the results came, I was in the train. I was coming back to home from Shirdi. I and my friend were on the third and upper berth. When we heard about our results we jumped from that berth to wake up the whole coach. We just enjoyed the moment, we shouted, we did everything but we couldn’t talk with our parents and family members because there was no network in the train

Alright, great. So, you were waiting like when the train will reach and I will inform first of all my parents?

Obviously, obviously. It was a feeling like, I wanted to fly back home but I couldn’t do it.

And what was your parent’s reaction after listening this?

They were crying and they were just like static. They were shocked because nobody expected that I would get the first rank in PCC.

So Nitish, how important is this for you, as after this expectation of everyone must be high?

This is really important. I wanted this boost because I left the CA in between after my CPT because I wanted to do MBA. I gave two CAT attempts but I didn’t succeed. So, its not just an achievement for me, it is a real achievement for me. It is a boost which I needed. I have entered into CA final with a big bang and I just needed it.

Were you expecting a rank?

Not really.I did work hard to get some very good marks. I was expecting more than 70% n was seeing myself in top 5..but 1st rank is like dream...

Great, and Nitish, will it create any pressure for getting rank in CA Final because now it is the biggest challenge or it will boost your confidence to face the same?

Yes, it will do both. It will create pressure on me to get rank or secure some very good marks in the Final but it has boosted my confidence to that level that I can face this challenge by doing some hard work.

Who guided you and helped you to get this score?

Everybody, my friend’s wishes, my mentors basically my teachers, my parents, my relatives, all my best wishers helped me. What they could do for me, they did it in the best way.

What was your strategy for studying for PCC, your day’s schedule and the proper strategy that you have followed?

I am a PCC student. My day started at 9 am in the morning and I used to sit for study at around 10 am in the first slot. I studied from 10 am to 2pm, then I took my lunch and then I got ready and went to my friend’s place to study for the second slot; that was like 4 to 8 PM and then in the third slot I studied by getting back home from 10PM to 2 AM or 1 AM. That was the strategy to study atleast 12 hours. If not 12 hours, then atleast 10 hours.

Ok. So, what is the most important thing one should keep in mind during the preparation time, before the exams and during the exams?

One should stick to the basics. The basics is the key to success. You can do the advance level only after your basics are clear. People go towards the advanced level before setting the platform to their basics. This is the biggest problem we face in exams. Nothing is out of course, nothing is like we didn’t study. The thing is the modulated questions which were the challenges for the students whose basics are not clear, whose basics are not strong, I would say.

During the exams, like any strategy you followed to attempt the exam?

To attempt, the exam is to read the paper carefully. Even if it takes 5 minutes more, you should give it to the exam so that you can plan your exams what question to do first, what to do afterwards. So, do the questions that you know well, that you know that you can do very easily and correctly. Do these questions then move ahead for other questions. Don’t think that you don’t know the paper. Try to recollect all the things you have done, you have practiced. That will help you to get good marks and attempt the paper easily.

You mean one should be calm while giving the exams?

Yes sir, one should be calm. Patience is the key.

What would be your strategy for articleship now, in which companies will you apply?

Actually I am a PCC student, so my articleship is still going on. So, I would continue there only right now.

Are you following any specific strategies in articleship? How important is this for you?

It’s really important because if you don’t know the practical world, you can’t do anything. The rank would be a boost only if you know the practical knowledge.

Exactly. So, as you are working in the articleship, so did it help you in the exams?

Obviously Sir. Your mind frame will set accordingly in the accounts paper, tax paper. The articleship is really helpful in attempting the tax papers and audit papers. I won’t say for Law and ITSM but it is helpful for accounts and audit papers.

So, Nitish apart from studies what are your other hobbies?

In the spare time, I do watch movies, cartoons, hang out with my friends, spend time with my family, roam around here and there. I do get time from my studies and enjoyed around 2 to 3 hours in a day apart from the studies. I used to go to gym during my exams as I was a bit overweight. But, it still worked hard because after gym you really get stamina for studies.

Hope now, you are in a good shape.

No Sir, not exactly. I should work hard.

You have already proved yourself in one area, you can also prove yourself in that!!

I will prove in that area too.

And do you have any message for aspiring CAs and CAclubindia members?

Yes sir, Don’t be tensed. Be in cheerful mood always. Stick to the basics. Plan your study accordingly. What is your strength and weakness and apart from that make your targets for the day and then for the weeks. Make your small target and try to achieve it. That’s it!

Was CCI of any help to you?

My sister is a member of CCI. She did post questions from my side and I did get answers. It was really helpful for the tax paper and I did get the solved exam papers of previous exams from your site. It was really helpful. CCI is great.

Nitish, it was really nice talking to you and once again many congratulations to you from CAclubindia.com and all the best for your future!

Thank you!!
