PAN stands for "Permanent Account Number." It is a unique, ten-digit alphanumeric identifier issued by the Income Tax Department of India to individuals, businesses, and entities for the purpose of tracking financial transactions and taxation. PAN serves as a universal identification key for various financial activities, including filing income tax returns, making financial transactions, and carrying out business-related activities.

The PAN system helps the government keep track of financial transactions, prevent tax evasion, and ensure transparency in economic activities. Each PAN is unique and remains constant throughout an individual's lifetime, even if there are changes in their personal details or location. It is an essential document for individuals and entities engaging in financial transactions and complying with tax regulations in India.
