Once a taxpayer receives SMS alert from the income tax department regarding TDS, taxpayers should verify the information provided in the SMS with their office salary slips or other relevant documents to ensure accuracy.

Reason of SMS Alert: IT Department might have found discrepancies in TDS information.

Salaried individuals who have received this SMS notification should wait until mid-June to file their IT Returns for the fiscal year 2023-24.

Reason to wait: By waiting till mid-June taxpayers will have all the necessary documents as employers are required to issue Form 16 by June 15, which contains essential details for tax filing.

For Early Filing

For early filing, there is an option using the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal but experts suggested to wait until Form 26AS and AIS (Annual Information Statement) are completely updated. This helps to ensure a smoother process while filing ITR, as Form 16 contains essential details such as TDS and Tax Collected at Source (TCS) for various transactions between employers and employees.

 

How to view 26AS

Through Income Tax Department's e-Filing Portal

  • Go to the Income Tax Department's e-Filing Portal and login.
  • After logging in, navigate to 'e-File' and click on 'Income Tax Return'.
  • In the drop-down menu, click on 'View Form 26AS (Tax Credit)'.
  • Once click on 'View Form 26AS, you will be redirected to the (Traces) website to view your Form 26AS.
 

Through TDS Reconciliation Analysis and Correction Enabling System

  • Visit the TRACES website and log in using your TRACES login ID.
  • Click on the link 'View Tax credit (Form 26AS)' at the bottom of the page to view your form.
