The Income Tax Department has set up a 24x7 helpdesk to assist taxpayers in various aspects of Income Tax Return (ITR) filing, tax payments, and related services. Taxpayers can seek support through different channels, including phone calls, chats etc. This continuous support aims to provide guidance and address queries from taxpayers, making the tax-filing process more accessible and user-friendly.

What happens if ITR not filed on time?

If Income Tax Returns (ITRs) are not filed on time, penalties are imposed based on the delay:

  • If the ITR is filed between August 1 and December 31 of the assessment year, a maximum penalty of ₹5,000 will be levied. However, if the total income of the individual is less than ₹5 lakh in a fiscal year, the maximum penalty is ₹1,000.
  • If the ITR is submitted after December 31 of the assessment year, the penalty increases to ₹10,000.

It is essential to file the ITR on time to avoid these penalties and stay compliant with the income tax regulations.
