How To Become A Chartered Accountant In India

Course Structure of CA

CA course is an extensive one that covers almost all aspects of finances and is divided into 4 stages, clearing each of which is mandatory. They include:

  1. CA Foundation
  2. CA Intermediate
  3. Articleship for 3 years and
  4. CA Final.

CA Foundation part

For those of you that are planning to begin the CA course early right away after your 12th standard without going for the regular graduation degree, it is mandatory to appear for the Foundation examination.

In this case, you should register for the exam straight away after your exam and start preparing for it. You will have to furnish the complete set of documents for the registration including your 12th standard marks. But there is also the scope of provisional registration for those that have appeared for the 12th exam where you have to produce the pass marksheet before appearing for the Foundation exam.

Registration for CA Foundation is done twice a year and the usual dates of the exams are 30th June and 31st December. After registration, it is mandatory to complete 4-months of study period that commences from the date of the registration. This is the study period given to students to prepare for the forthcoming exam.

CA Intermediate level

Once you have cleared the Foundation, you will have to register once again with the BoS for appearing for the Intermediate Level examinations. For this level, it is mandatory to complete 8-months of preparation or study time before appearing for the examinations. The Institute provides study material and following them carefully should help you to a large extent.

Direct Entry To Intermediate Level

For those of you who have already undergone your graduation or plan to take it up or those that decide to become a CA during or after your Master’s course, you can directly enroll for the Intermediate level. Those that have studied in the commerce stream will have to secure a minimum of 55% in graduation and 60% for non-commerce streams.

Those that have passed the course from the Institute of Cost Accountants of India or The Institute of Company Secretaries of India, are also eligible for the Direct Entry to the Intermediate level like Graduate and Post Graduate students.

Mandatory courses to attend

A mandatory part of completing the CA course is undergoing and completing the Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (ICITSS) for 4 weeks. Experts suggest that you should complete it after clearing at least one of the 2 Intermediate groups and before the Practical Training. This will leave you to enable you to undergo the 4-weeks of Advanced Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (AICITSS). This way, you will be able to complete all the requisite courses before the Final level.

The CA Final Level

You can start preparing for the Final Groups as you undergo the Practical Training of Articleship. It helps in saving time in the process of becoming a CA. Also, it is good to appear for both groups together and clear them as most blue-chip companies consider appearing for the groups separately as different attempts.

With your dedication and determination, you should be able to clear it in the first attempt. Take the help of professionals like the SJC Institute to get helpful coaching and tips to be sure of clearing it in the first shot!
