Impact on Filing

Without valid bank account details in their GST registration, taxpayers will be unable to file GSTR-1 or IFF starting from the tax period of August 2024.

Purpose of Amendment

The rule, amended in July 2023, aims to strengthen the registration process and combat fraudulent registrations.

Action Required

Taxpayers who haven't yet updated their bank account details should do so immediately via the GST portal.

Advisory Note

GST Network (GSTN) has issued an advisory urging all taxpayers to ensure their bank account details are updated to avoid disruption in filing returns.

Impact of the New GST Rule Enforcement

  • Inability to File Returns: Taxpayers without valid bank account details linked to their GST registration will be unable to file their outward supply return (GSTR-1) or use the Invoice Furnishing Facility (IFF) starting from September 1, 2024.
  • Compliance Pressure: Taxpayers will face pressure to comply with the new rule by updating their bank account information to avoid disruption in their filing process.
  • Potential Disruption: Businesses failing to provide valid bank account details may experience disruptions in their GST compliance, affecting their ability to report outward supplies and claim input tax credits.
  • Increased Registration Scrutiny: The amendment aims to reduce fraudulent registrations, thereby increasing the scrutiny of new and existing GST registrations.
  • Operational Challenges: Companies may need to update their systems and processes to ensure compliance with the new requirement, which could involve additional administrative effort.
  • Regulatory Enforcement: GST authorities will enforce this rule strictly, which could result in penalties or other consequences for non-compliance.
  • Encouragement for Accurate Registrations: The rule is designed to encourage taxpayers to maintain accurate and legitimate registration details, thereby improving the overall integrity of the GST system.
