The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) set-up under the Chartered Accountant Act, 1949 to regulate the profession of Chartered Accountancy is one of the largest and prominent accounting body worldwide. It has been taking various proactive steps to raise the standards of education of accounting and financial reporting from time to time in keeping with the global trends. The demand for chartered accountants is on a rise. This is evident from the number of students which will be appearing for the CA entrance exam i.e Common Proficiency Test (CPT ) to be held on 14th Dec., 2008. A record no. of 91,783 students will be taking their Common Proficiency Test (CPT ) . While earlier in the year in June, 2008, about 76,000 students had appeared for this exam.
CPT is the entrance exam that a candidate needs to undertake as an entrance level route to the Chartered Accountancy stream which every intending candidate is to clear before enrolling for the professional state. After passing 10th standard examination, a student can register with ICAI and prepare for entry level test while pursuing 10+2 level study. This exam is conducted two times in a year by the ICAI.
The examination this year will be held in 221 centers in 114 cities across the country to facilitate more and more students to be able to appear in the entrance exam .It has been observed over last 3 years that there has been more than three fold increase in number of students that clear the CPT exam and enroll for articleship as compared to years 2001-2005. There is an increase in the number of girl students opting for CA course. Out of total of 91,783 students appearing for CPT exam, 28,282 are girls i.e.32%. The performance of girls is also better than boys as is evident from the CPT exam results of June, 2008 wherein the pass percentage of the girl students was 41.37% as against 36% of the boy students.
In line with its efforts to enhance the efficiency in the conduct of examination, ICAI for the first time successfully conducted online Common Proficiency Test (CPT) on 7th December 2008 (Sunday) in 11 major cities. The Institute in times to come would aim to conduct the CPT exam online for the convenience of the candidates.

Any student on passing class 12th examination, from any background, from remotest place in India, can join the course and become a Chartered Accountant. To ensure that the students get the best of education, ICAI holds classes through television and broadcasting network with the objective of making Chartered Accountancy course education available to each and every one in the remote areas. The career opportunity for a Chartered Accountant is far better than any other profession.
